A rescue story can make the missing person seem like a destination. Annabeth deserves more than that. The announced separation is compelling because Percy and Annabeth have a relationship, not simply because he needs someone to save. I want their decisions to matter even when they cannot make them together.
The same goes for the prophecy. An enormous prediction can flatten every smaller concern unless the story lets these young people remain funny, irritated, frightened and occasionally wrong. The family appeal of a mythological adventure lives in that recognisable behaviour as much as in the creatures. The young hero in Way of the Warrior Kid faces a more everyday test of confidence, with a mentor rather than a prophecy shaping the challenge.
