The word final makes the rescue question feel different. In a survival story, getting home usually promises relief. Yellowjackets has spent its premise insisting that the people who come home still have to live with what happened. The last season now has to bring those two ideas together.
Rescue is approaching, but the secrets are not buried
The US season-four announcement puts the survivors under pressure to conceal their actions before rescue arrives. It also signals the return of an old flame with her own intentions. The release leaves the identity and consequences for the episodes to reveal.
That is enough of a premise for me. A list of every possible return would do more to narrow the mystery than deepen it. The tension lies in what rescue threatens to expose: being found can save a life while making the story someone tells about that life much harder to control.
There is a particularly cruel contradiction in wanting witnesses and fearing them at the same time. The wilderness gives the group terrible freedom from ordinary rules. A return to society means being seen by people who did not share those conditions and may not accept the explanation. Paramount describes two connected periods: the school soccer team’s ordeal after the 1996 crash and the lives the survivors build roughly 25 years later. That construction lets an adult decision change the meaning of a teenage scene, and vice versa. Sunrise on the Reaping uses a different kind of hindsight: viewers who know the older Haymitch enter his teenage ordeal already aware that surviving will not put the experience behind him.
I would be wary of an ending that explained the past neatly while treating the present as paperwork. Survival is only one part of the premise. The later timeline asks what people do with the chance to continue, including the choices that cannot be blamed entirely on the wilderness.
