You open a VPN pricing page to buy one thing: a VPN. Three columns appear. The middle one looks reassuringly popular, the expensive one has a longer checklist, and suddenly the cheapest option feels suspicious.
Does ExpressVPN Basic leave out something you actually need? Or are you about to buy a bundle because the pricing page did its job?
Basic is a sensible choice if you want ExpressVPN’s core service, need no more than 10 simultaneous connections, and already have the other tools you use. It deserves a proper look before you move up a tier.

The quick answer: who should choose Basic?
Start with Basic if your shopping list reads something like “VPN on my laptop, phone, tablet, and television.” Start comparing upgrades if it reads “VPN, a new password manager, more connections, and a specific work requirement.” Those are different purchases.
My rule is simple: name the extra feature you will use before paying for it. “The bigger plan must be better” does not count. Neither does a password manager you will never open because you already like your current one.
Basic is the cheapest ExpressVPN tier in this offer. That does not automatically make it the cheapest VPN available, or the right subscription for someone who only needs a few days of access.
ExpressVPN Basic pricing: November 3–17, 2026
The supplied partner campaign covers 24 months plus 4 extra months, giving you 28 months in total. These are introductory monthly equivalents for a long subscription, not a promise that you can pay that amount month by month.
USD campaign rates
| Plan | Monthly equivalent | Campaign discount | Estimated 28-month total* |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $2.99 | 80% | $83.72 |
| Advanced | $4.19 | 75% | $117.32 |
| Express Pro | $7.19 | 68% | $201.32 |
EUR campaign rates
| Plan | Monthly equivalent | Campaign discount | Estimated 28-month total* |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | €2.49 | 80% | €69.72 |
| Advanced | €3.99 | 73% | €111.72 |
| Express Pro | €6.49 | 67% | €181.72 |
*Estimated totals are the supplied rounded monthly rate multiplied by 28, before tax. They are calculations, not confirmed checkout bills. USD and EUR are separate campaign price lists, not currency conversions.
The useful comparison is the extra commitment. Based on those rounded rates, Advanced costs about $33.60 or €42 more than Basic over the introductory term. Pro costs about $117.60 or €112 more than Basic. That makes “which extras will I use?” a much clearer question.
What does ExpressVPN Basic actually include?
The core VPN, with room for your everyday devices
ExpressVPN introduced Basic as the entry point to its core VPN service, including technologies such as Lightway and TrustedServer. It is not described as a trial version. Choosing a higher tier should be about its additional allowances and tools, rather than assuming that a more expensive label makes every connection faster.
The current device limits are 10 simultaneous VPN connections on Basic, 12 on Advanced, and 14 on Express Pro. Count what you connect at the same time. A phone, laptop, tablet, and Apple TV make four active connections, leaving six slots on Basic.
Advanced Protection is now included in Basic
ExpressVPN’s October 30, 2026 support update includes Advanced Protection on all tiers: ad, tracker, malicious-site, and adult-site blocking. Older comparisons may describe a narrower Basic package.
The filters use DNS blocklists and start disabled. Platform rules differ; Apple TV has ad and tracker blocking. Check the linked app and protocol requirements before enabling them.
Keep your judgment switched on too. Filtering is useful support, not a promise that every unsafe website or misleading message will disappear.
A couple of extras, with limits
The current subscription breakdown also lists ExpressMailGuard and ExpressAI on Basic, with plan limits. ExpressMailGuard is an email relay service; ExpressAI is an AI workspace. Their allowances differ between tiers.
Treat these as useful extras if they fit your habits. If an AI feature or email allowance is the main reason you are buying, compare that specific limit before choosing. A long checklist is less helpful than knowing whether the tool covers your actual workload.
When Basic is probably enough
You want a VPN on your laptop and phone
This is the straightforward case. You work on a laptop, browse on a phone, and occasionally use a tablet. You already have a password manager and do not need a fixed VPN address. Basic is the logical plan to evaluate first.
For platform-specific guidance, our ExpressVPN for Mac guide and Windows setup article take the next step beyond choosing a subscription.
You want to connect a television as well
A television does not automatically turn you into a Pro customer. Count it alongside the other devices, then check how your particular model connects. Our Apple TV guide covers that platform.
There is no need to buy more connections just because one screen is enormous. Equally, do not buy any tier on the assumption that it guarantees access to every streaming catalog; subscriptions, content rights, and VPN detection still affect what plays.
You travel, but already have your mobile data sorted
If your phone plan or travel eSIM already handles internet access, compare the VPN on its own merits. An included travel-data perk is only valuable if it replaces something you would otherwise buy.
For example, someone taking one short trip with an existing roaming package may have little use for another eSIM. Someone planning several trips may value the higher-tier bundle differently. Start with the itinerary and device compatibility, then decide what the extras are worth.
When paying more makes sense
You genuinely need more simultaneous connections
Ten can be comfortable for one person and tight for a busy household. Write down what is connected during the busiest evening: laptops working, phones browsing, tablets in use, and televisions streaming. Use that count rather than the number of gadgets in a drawer.
Our ExpressVPN family guide explores that decision in more detail, including the difference between individual apps and a home-network setup.
You would actually use ExpressKeys
ExpressKeys is included with Advanced and Express Pro. It stores passwords and passkeys and provides tools such as autofill and secure sharing.
If you need a password manager, compare the upgrade cost with what you would pay for the alternative you prefer. If you already have one that works well, migration takes effort and the bundle may save you nothing. Paying twice for the same job is remarkably easy when everything is labeled “included.”
You need a dedicated IP for a specific reason
A dedicated IP gives you a fixed VPN address assigned to you. It can be relevant when an approved work system expects connections from a specific allowed address. Express Pro includes one; Basic and Advanced offer it as an add-on.
That means Pro is not automatically your only route. Compare the complete Basic-plus-add-on price against Pro, along with the locations and platforms you need. Our ExpressVPN dedicated IP and Pro guide explains the trade-offs. For ordinary browsing, you may have no reason to add one.
The subscription details worth checking before you pay
A 28-month commitment stretches well beyond the excitement of buying a new app. Read the initial total, selected currency, tax treatment, renewal date, and renewal price together. ExpressVPN’s two-year introductory subscriptions renew annually; do not project the campaign monthly rate onto future renewals.
For website purchases, ExpressVPN’s cancellation instructions explain how to stop automatic renewal through your account. Doing that still leaves access until the current subscription cycle ends. It is separate from requesting a refund.
New customers subscribing directly through the website can request a refund within 30 days under its money-back guarantee. Apple App Store and Google Play purchases follow those stores’ refund policies instead. This is a paid purchase with a refund window, so check it promptly rather than treating it as free access.
How to decide during your first week
A feature list cannot tell you how neatly an app fits your routine. Give yourself a small, realistic checklist:
- Install it on the devices you actually use. Start with your main computer and phone instead of configuring every gadget on day one.
- Connect and check your normal tasks. Browse, join a call, upload a file, and use the services that matter to you. Record any repeatable problem.
- Review the protection settings. Enable the filters you want and confirm the requirements for your app.
- Count active connections during a busy evening. If you remain comfortably below 10, extra slots are unlikely to justify an upgrade by themselves.
- Review the purchase before the refund deadline. Keep the receipt and use support while there is time to resolve an issue or request a refund if eligible.
My verdict: buy the features you need
ExpressVPN Basic is a credible starting point for someone who wants the VPN, can work within 10 simultaneous connections, and has no clear use for a larger bundle. The inclusion of Advanced Protection makes old advice about upgrading solely for tracker blocking outdated.
At the November 3–17 partner rates, the estimated 28-month commitment is $83.72 or €69.72 before tax. Compare that with the price actually offered at checkout, then choose on purpose. The best-value tier is the one whose features you will use after the pricing page has closed.
Frequently asked questions
Is ExpressVPN Basic the same as a free plan?
No. Basic is a paid subscription tier. The campaign’s monthly figure is an equivalent rate for the 28-month introductory offer, not a free trial or monthly payment option at that price.
Does Basic include tracker blocking?
Yes. ExpressVPN’s October 30, 2026 guidance includes Advanced Protection across all three tiers. Enable the relevant settings and check your platform’s connection requirements.
How many devices can use Basic at once?
Basic supports 10 simultaneous VPN connections. Advanced supports 12, and Express Pro supports 14. The useful number is how many connections you need at the same time.
Do I need Pro to get a dedicated IP?
No. Pro includes dedicated IP, but it is also available as an add-on to Basic and Advanced. Compare the full cost and supported setup before choosing.
Why might checkout show a different price?
The tables describe the supplied November 3–17 partner campaign. The link may display another offer, and the final bill can differ from a calculation using rounded monthly rates. Confirm the term, currency, total, and renewal details before paying.
