You open JioHotstar from abroad. Content not available. That’s it. No partial catalog, no trimmed version. Just a wall.
This is not a glitch. JioHotstar is geo-locked to India only, which means every single country outside India gets blocked. All 193 of them. If you want the IPL, ICC cricket, Bollywood or any of the 100,000+ titles on the platform, you need to look like you’re sitting in India. Here’s exactly how to do that.

What Is JioHotstar and Why Does Everyone Care About It?
JioHotstar launched in February 2025 when Disney+ Hotstar merged with JioCinema to create one giant platform under the JioStar joint venture between Reliance and Disney. The result is India’s biggest streaming service by a wide margin.
What’s on it? Pretty much everything Indians watch. Live IPL cricket. ICC tournaments. Over 100,000 titles across Bollywood, regional Indian cinema in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Bengali, Kannada and Marathi. The full Disney, Marvel and Star Wars libraries. And since April 2026, HBO Max launched in India exclusively through JioHotstar as a low-cost add-on, which means you now get HBO and Max Originals in the same place.
150 new titles land on the platform every single month. The app supports 4K with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos on the top plan. You can download up to 30 titles for offline viewing.
For anyone who follows cricket or Indian content, there is genuinely no substitute.
The Problem: Blocked Everywhere Outside India
Unlike Sun NXT which at least gives you a trimmed international version in 38 countries, JioHotstar gives you nothing outside India. One country available. 193 countries blocked. The diaspora Hotstar service still runs in the UK, Canada and Singapore but that is a different product with a different catalog.
If it is the IPL, the full Bollywood library or the Indian JioHotstar catalog you want, you need an Indian IP address. Full stop.

How to Watch JioHotstar from Anywhere
A VPN is the answer. You connect to an Indian server, JioHotstar reads your IP as Indian and the full platform opens up. The setup takes about two minutes and works on your phone, tablet, laptop, Smart TV or Fire TV.
But here is the thing: JioHotstar actively detects and blocks VPNs. Most providers simply do not get through. The StreamFix team tests every VPN against JioHotstar every week. As of June 2026, out of seven VPNs tested, only three work reliably:
- NordVPN (best pick, tested June 7)
- Surfshark (tested June 7)
- ExpressVPN (tested June 8)
ProtonVPN, PIA, CyberGhost and IPVanish all came back as partial only. That means they might work for a bit and then drop you mid-match. Not ideal when India is batting in the final over.
Free VPNs do not even get close. JioHotstar flags them instantly.
The setup:
- Get NordVPN (currently 77% off + 3 months free)
- Connect to an Indian server, look for ones labeled streaming or optimized
- Go to hotstar.com or open the JioHotstar app
- Log in with your Indian account and start watching
- If you hit a geo-error, just switch to a different Indian server and try again
You still need your own Indian JioHotstar account. The VPN just changes your location. It does not give you a free subscription.
What Does JioHotstar Actually Cost?
Three plans, all billed in Indian Rupees, all currently at 30% off:
Mobile: 499 INR per year Up to 720p, one device, with ads, offline downloads included.
Super: 1,099 INR per year Up to 1080p, two devices, with ads, offline downloads, Dolby Atmos.
Premium: 2,199 INR per year 4K Dolby Vision, four devices, no ads, offline downloads, Dolby Atmos.
No refund policy and no account sharing allowed. Two-factor authentication is available which is worth turning on.
For context: the Premium plan at 2,199 INR per year works out to well under 30 USD annually. For 100,000+ titles plus live cricket in 4K, that is genuinely hard to argue with.
What Is Hot on JioHotstar Right Now
Cricket is always the anchor. The IPL and ICC tournaments drive more traffic to JioHotstar than anything else and the platform streams live matches in 4K. If you watch cricket from outside India, this is the main reason to get the platform sorted.
Beyond sport, the top titles right now include The Mandalorian, Shogun and Loki on the international content side. On the Indian side, Anupamaa continues to pull huge numbers as one of the most watched Hindi dramas on the platform.
The HBO Max add-on that launched in April 2026 has added a serious boost to the catalog. HBO and Max Originals are now available in India for the first time through JioHotstar, which makes the platform even harder to ignore for anyone who wants both Indian content and Western prestige TV in one place.
Is JioHotstar Worth It?
If you follow cricket at all, yes. There is no legal way to watch the IPL or ICC tournaments live from outside India without JioHotstar and a VPN. The platform has a complete monopoly on that content.
If you are into Indian cinema and television more broadly, the 100,000+ title catalog across eight languages at under 30 USD per year for the top plan is a genuinely excellent deal. Especially now with HBO Max content included.
The VPN adds a small cost and a small amount of setup friction. But NordVPN at 77% off costs less per year than two months of Netflix. And the 30-day money-back guarantee means you can test everything risk-free before committing.
One platform. Eight languages. Live cricket. HBO. 4K. Under 30 dollars a year. Hard to beat.
