La Comtesse de Monte-Cristo: When Audrey Fleurot’s Drama Starts

Audrey Fleurot leads a new Monte-Cristo adaptation from Mercédès’ point of view. The French premiere is November 16, 2026, on TF1 and TF1+.

La Comtesse de Monte-Cristo premieres in France on November 16, 2026, at 21:10 CET, on TF1 and TF1+. Audrey Fleurot plays Mercédès Herrera in a version of Alexandre Dumas’ story that gives the woman left behind a very different destiny.

The title is more than a change of gender. This adaptation starts with an existing character and asks what happens when she becomes the person driving the revenge. That is a promising reason to revisit a story with so many screen versions already behind it.

Mercédès takes the story away from Edmond

The TF1 release announcement opens the story in Marseille in 1815. Mercédès expects a future with Edmond Dantès until a betrayal destroys it. The series follows her response, using a familiar starting point to build a different adventure.

Gaïa Guasti and Djibril Glissant created the eight-part series, with Glissant and Leonardo D’Antoni directing. The announced episodes run approximately 52 minutes. Fleurot’s fellow cast members include Zabou Breitman, Simon Ehrlacher, Kad Merad, Thierry Godard and Denis Lavant.

Changing who carries the story changes the revenge itself. A character who has been treated as someone’s beloved can have different things to recover from a character who has been robbed of a public future. I would want the adaptation to take that difference seriously, rather than simply give Mercédès Edmond’s lines. The question of a woman gaining authority inside a restrictive world also runs through The Empress season 3, though Elisabeth’s historical drama and Mercédès’ literary adventure start from very different material.

Audrey Fleurot wanted more than another performance

In her TF1 interview, Fleurot explains that becoming a coproducer let her take part earlier in writing, casting and the visual approach. She and Glissant returned to the novel during development, looking for a reason to retell it rather than simply reproduce it.

She describes a more colourful, adventurous heroine and an interest in sections involving Italy and Turkey. She also points to a substantial change in how the treasure functions: Mercédès’ success should not depend solely on wealth solving every obstacle.

That last decision is the one I find most interesting. A fortune can remove practical problems so efficiently that the avenger seems untouchable. Making intelligence and adaptability matter gives the heroine something to do when money cannot settle the scene for her.

Costume as a tool, rather than decoration

TF1’s production feature describes costume designer Marie Frémont giving Mercédès greater visual freedom than the people around her. The heroine’s clothing can break social expectations and help her construct different identities.

A disguise can be enjoyable on its own, but here it also fits the underlying idea: a woman whose position gives her little authority learns to control how other people read her. Clothing becomes part of the action. It tells us what she wants someone to believe before she has said a word. In the fictional royal setting of The Remarried Empress, marriage and public standing create another struggle over who controls a woman’s future.

The journey reaches beyond a revenge plot

The production team says it wanted each stage of the journey to have its own atmosphere, rather than making the whole series a single dark pursuit. Its account also gives Héloïse de Villefort, played by Zabou Breitman, a more active role as an opponent who can recognise Mercédès’ intentions.

That sounds like a useful counterweight. Revenge becomes less predictable when the target can see it coming and respond. The question is no longer only whether the heroine can carry out her plan, but what she will become while someone else is trying to frustrate it.

Fleurot’s interview refers to the adventure sagas she enjoyed growing up, and the creators discuss a mixture of romance, danger and lighter passages. Those are statements of intent, not proof of the finished balance. Still, they suggest this series wants to offer more movement and tonal variety than the word “revenge” alone might imply. For another French literary adaptation arriving this month, The Hunchback: Soul of Paris returns to Victor Hugo. Looking at what each production chooses to change is more revealing than expecting either to serve as a substitute for its source novel.

For another series built around a woman forced to reinvent herself, Anna’s Aniela article offers a contemporary comparison. The settings could hardly be further apart, but both premises make social status something a character has to negotiate rather than simply possess.

TF1 is confirmed; Netflix streaming is not

Netflix is named as a production associate. That does not establish a simultaneous Netflix premiere. The announced French route is TF1 and TF1+, and the broadcaster’s current schedule should be used for later episode slots.

English subtitles and an English dub are also unconfirmed in the materials checked. Search the full French title and inspect language options in the service available to you. TF1’s service conditions include territorial limits, so online availability should not be read as worldwide programme access.
